What Highland Falls Is Like

Main Street is the recognizable spine of Highland Falls, serving local businesses and visitors headed toward the West Point Museum and Visitors Center. Unlike Fort Montgomery's hamlet setting, Highland Falls has a distinct village government, downtown streets and daily civic activity.

Getting Around Highland Falls

State Route 9W and local approaches to West Point are key routes. The West Point installation has its own security and visitor-pass requirements; living near West Point never guarantees installation access. This is a driving-oriented area, not an LIRR commuter village.

Parks, Trails & Life Near Bear Mountain

The Town of Highlands identifies Roe Park, Memorial Park, Center Street Park and Ladycliff Park in Highland Falls. Bear Mountain and Harriman parkland offer larger hikes a short regional trip away, while the village itself has local walking and recreation options.

Before hiking, check the New York State Parks trail information for current closures. Portions of Bear Mountain's trail system have posted detours during work near the inn.

Highland Falls' Main Street contains restaurants, cafes and everyday services, serving both residents and West Point visitors. The changing storefront mix is best explored on foot; the corridor is much more compact than a large regional shopping center.

The Highland Falls-Fort Montgomery Central School District includes Fort Montgomery Elementary, Highland Falls Intermediate and James I. O'Neill High School.
