Fort Montgomery, NY Real Estate & Local Guide
View Fort Montgomery Homes for Sale
Fort Montgomery is a Hudson Highlands hamlet in the Town of Highlands, Orange County, positioned near the Bear Mountain Bridge, the Popolopen Creek corridor and the entrance to Bear Mountain State Park. Its wooded terrain and historic Hudson River setting feel entirely different from a large suburban shopping district.
I'm John Cordeira, Broker/Owner of Cordeira Homes. After more than 20 years working with Long Island buyers and sellers, I started exploring the Hudson Highlands on foot. My 7.1-mile Bear Mountain hike inspired me to build a researched guide to the communities around the park, while being clear about what I have and have not personally experienced.

What Fort Montgomery Is Like
What distinguishes Fort Montgomery is the close connection between residential roads, steep terrain, Revolutionary War history and outdoor recreation. Its namesake state historic site overlooks the Hudson where a critical 1777 battle took place. The historic site and modern hamlet are related, but they are not the same thing.
Getting Around Fort Montgomery
Route 9W is the practical north-south road. The Bear Mountain Bridge connects this side of the Hudson to the east bank; the Palisades Interstate Parkway is also part of regional car travel. Confirm individual drive times rather than assuming a rail stop or a uniform commute.
Parks, Trails & Life Near Bear Mountain
Brooks Lake Park has trails, recreation areas and a dog park, while Mine Dock Park provides river access. The Fort Montgomery State Historic Site brings the area's military history onto the trail map. Bear Mountain State Park adds a much larger landscape of hiking routes and overlooks.

Before hiking, check the New York State Parks trail information for current closures. Portions of Bear Mountain's trail system have posted detours during work near the inn.
Shopping, Dining & Daily Services
Fort Montgomery is not a conventional downtown shopping destination. Residents commonly look to neighboring Highland Falls and the Route 9W corridor for restaurants and daily errands. Store availability, hours and parking should always be checked individually.
Schools & Municipal Information
The Highland Falls-Fort Montgomery Central School District lists Fort Montgomery Elementary School, Highland Falls Intermediate School and James I. O'Neill High School. Confirm each property's district and assigned school directly. School information: official district website. Local government: official municipal website.

Thinking of Buying in Fort Montgomery?
A wooded hillside property, a home near the historic site and a place closer to the river can have very different access, maintenance and drainage considerations. Buyers should assess driveway slopes, stormwater management, septic or municipal service connections, road maintenance and any flood or steep-slope constraints at the specific address.

For sellers, a thoughtful listing should describe the actual setting and access rather than relying on 'near Bear Mountain.' Survey, property features, improvement permits and maintenance details all help buyers evaluate an unusual Hudson Highlands property.
