Fort Montgomery Parks & Outdoor Recreation
« Fort Montgomery Real Estate & Local Guide
Fort Montgomery's most distinctive asset is its location near mountain trails and the Hudson River. Here are the local and regional places worth knowing before visiting or buying nearby.
Brooks Lake Park
The Town of Highlands lists playground facilities, a pavilion, sports fields, a dog park, hiking trails, basketball and fishing at Brooks Lake Park. Verify current access and park rules with Town of Highlands Recreation.
Mine Dock Park
This is a town-listed Hudson waterfront recreation area with kayak access. Parking, launch rules and water conditions should be checked before arriving; a kayak launch is not the same as a public swimming beach.
Fort Montgomery State Historic Site
At 690 Route 9W, the state historic site preserves Revolutionary War remains and offers exhibits and a Hudson overlook. Portions of the ruins and trails have had accessibility and renovation closures, so verify what's open.
Bear Mountain State Park & the Appalachian Trail
The nearby state park is known for wooded climbs, overlooks and the Appalachian Trail. I completed a 7.1-mile Bear Mountain Loop via Twin Forts, including stone steps and a rocky descent. That's my actual hiking experience, not a claimed visit to every nearby trail.

Read my Bear Mountain hiking journey and see the recorded route. Always check New York State Parks trail notices for closure and detour updates.
Before Choosing a Home Near the Trails
A trail shown on a map may not connect to a neighborhood street. Compare legally accessible trailheads, parking and actual travel routes for each house. For homes on uneven terrain, investigate drainage, grading and driveways as well.
