West Babylon is the most populous hamlet in the Town of Babylon: about 43,000 people between Lindenhurst and the Village of Babylon, stretching from Route 109 down to three necks of land on the Great South Bay.
West Babylon is an unincorporated hamlet in the Town of Babylon, Suffolk County, so local government is the Town and the County, not a village. It borders Lindenhurst and North Lindenhurst to the west, East Farmingdale and Wyandanch to the north, Deer Park to the northeast, North Babylon and the Village of Babylon to the east, and the Great South Bay to the south. It has no LIRR station of its own; the Lindenhurst and Babylon stations sit on either side.

The earliest written record of the name "Babylon" is tied to Nathaniel Conklin's house, built in 1803 on Deer Park Avenue. His mother, Phebe Smith Conklin, is traditionally credited with choosing the name. In 1830 the local post office was renamed from Huntington South to Babylon, and in 1872 the Town of Babylon split off from the Town of Huntington.
For most of the 1800s, the whole area that's now West Babylon, North Babylon and the Village of Babylon was just "Babylon." "West Babylon" started as a direction, the western side of town. When the Village of Babylon incorporated in 1893, a line was drawn, but West Babylon didn't really get its own identity until the building boom after World War II. Residents pushed for their own address in 1951, the West Babylon post office opened on Sunrise Highway in 1956, and it got the 11704 ZIP code in 1963.
West Babylon went from about 2,700 people in 1950 to about 8,000 in 1960, and kept growing to more than 43,000. The Great South Bay Shopping Center opened in 1956, the fire department organized in 1945 and became its own fire district in 1948, and the West Babylon Public Library opened in 1983.

South of Montauk Highway, West Babylon runs down to the Great South Bay on Santapogue Neck, Great East Neck and part of Little East Neck, with canals cutting in from the bay.
On the southwest corner of the hamlet, Venetian Shores was laid out as a bayfront development starting in 1926. It's part of West Babylon, but its homes use the Lindenhurst post office, school district, library and fire department. That's why you'll see it listed with a Lindenhurst address. More on that side of the line in my Lindenhurst guide.
If you're buying on the water, check the flood zone, elevation certificate, flood insurance cost, bulkhead condition and dock rights for that specific property. Never assume boat access from a canal view.
The Town of Babylon lists these parks in West Babylon:
On Granada Parkway, the Town's Venetian Shores Park has a bay beach with swimming, a boat launch ramp, fishing, softball and turf fields, basketball and tennis courts, a roller hockey rink, a playground and a spray park. The beach and spray park are for Town of Babylon residents with a permit, open daily from late June through Labor Day.
At Sawyer Avenue and Bedell Road: baseball and softball fields, basketball and tennis courts, a playground, a picnic area and a Town pool with a children's pool. Check the Town's pool page for season and permit details.
West Babylon is where a lot of this stretch of the South Shore does its shopping. The Great South Bay Shopping Center on Montauk Highway has been there since 1956. There's no single downtown here. Instead, the restaurants sit along the main roads: Route 109, Montauk Highway and Sunrise Highway, plus the neighborhood pizzerias up the East Neck roads and a couple of spots on the water at Bergen Point. Here's the lineup by road. Hours change, so check before you go.

By train: West Babylon doesn't have its own station. Most of the hamlet is a short drive from either Lindenhurst station or Babylon station on the Babylon Branch. Check the MTA's station information for parking and schedules at each.
By car: Sunrise Highway and Montauk Highway run east-west through the hamlet. Route 109 crosses the northern side, and Great East Neck Road and Little East Neck Road run north-south down toward the bay.
West Babylon is one of the clearest examples of why a mailing address doesn't tell you the school district.
The West Babylon UFSD serves about half the hamlet, plus parts of the Village of Babylon and Wyandanch. Its schools are John F. Kennedy, Santapogue, South Bay and Tooker Avenue Elementary Schools, West Babylon Junior High School and West Babylon Senior High School. The district office is at 10 Farmingdale Road.

Price it right, fix what an inspector will flag before you list, and present it well from day one. Know your school district and have it ready for buyers, because in West Babylon it's one of the first questions. If your home is on the water, have your flood and elevation paperwork ready too. Reach out to me directly and we'll put together the right plan.

From the bay necks to Route 109, West Babylon is a big place with a lot of history most people don't know, like Walt Whitman teaching at its first schoolhouse. If there's a restaurant, park, event or piece of local history I'm missing, tell me.
