Copiague is a South Shore hamlet between Amityville and Lindenhurst, with a train station on the Babylon Branch, three necks of land reaching into the Great South Bay, and canal neighborhoods that were built in the 1920s to sell the dream of living on the water.
Copiague is an unincorporated hamlet in the Town of Babylon, Suffolk County, so local government is the Town and the County, not a village. It sits between the Village of Amityville to the west and Lindenhurst to the east, with North Amityville to the north and the Great South Bay to the south. The name is reportedly from a Native American term meaning "sheltered place." Before the railroad settled on "Copiague" around 1900, the area went by names like Powell's, Great Neck and East Amityville.
Copiague's main ZIP code is 11726, but some of its waterfront neighborhoods get mail through neighboring post offices. That's why Copiague homes sometimes show up with an Amityville or Lindenhurst address.

South of Montauk Highway, three necks of land run down to the Great South Bay, each with its own history.
On the southeastern neck, American Venice was built in the 1920s to resemble Venice, Italy, with gondola rides in its early days. Its homes get mail through the Lindenhurst post office.
The central neck, between American Venice and Amity Harbor, is Copiague Harbor, served by the Copiague post office.
The southwestern neck is Amity Harbor, a 1920s canal community laid out by developer George J. Brown, with Tanner Park at its bay end. Because Amity Harbor homes use the Amityville post office, I cover it in depth in my Amityville, North Amityville & Amity Harbor guide.

By train: Copiague station is on the Babylon Branch, at Marconi Boulevard and Great Neck Road, one block north of Oak Street. The current elevated station opened in 1973, and there's commuter parking. Check the MTA's station information for schedules and parking rules.
By car: Great Neck Road is Copiague's main north-south road, running from the bay up past the station. Montauk Highway and Sunrise Highway carry east-west traffic toward Amityville, Massapequa and Nassau to the west and Lindenhurst and Babylon to the east.
Copiague's big outdoor asset is the Town of Babylon's Tanner Park, a 93-acre bay-front park at the end of Amity Harbor. The Town lists a bay beach with swimming, a spray park, fishing piers, a band shell for summer concerts, a boat launching ramp, ball fields, turf fields, tennis and bocce courts, a skate park, a playground and a senior center. The beach and spray park are for Town of Babylon residents with a permit, and they open daily in summer from late June through Labor Day.
The Town also lists Veterans Memorial Plaza, with World War I and World War II monuments, and Gateway Park in Copiague.
If you're buying on the water in American Venice, Copiague Harbor or Amity Harbor, do your homework: flood zone, elevation certificate, flood insurance cost, bulkhead condition and dock rights. Never assume boat access from a canal view.
For longer runs and trail time, Massapequa Preserve is a short drive west, with the paved Bethpage Bikeway heading north toward Bethpage State Park. See my Massapequa parks and trails guide.
Most of Copiague's food runs along Montauk Highway, Great Neck Road, Oak Street and Sunrise Highway, with plenty of everyday spots: delis, bakeries, pizza and sit-down restaurants. A few to know:

The Copiague Union Free School District serves most of Copiague, the eastern half of North Amityville and a western part of North Lindenhurst. Its schools are Great Neck Road Elementary, which opened in 1911 and is the oldest elementary school in the Town of Babylon, Deauville Gardens East and Deauville Gardens West Elementary, Susan E. Wiley Elementary, Copiague Middle School and Walter G. O'Connell Copiague High School. The district office is at 2650 Great Neck Road.
Part of Copiague, west of Bayview Avenue and north of Dixon Avenue, is in the Amityville Union Free School District instead. Verify the district for the individual property. Search: homes in the Copiague school district.
A rail line has run through Copiague since 1867, and an electric trolley connected Amityville and Babylon through here from 1910 to 1920. George Washington dined in the area on April 21, 1790, when it was part of what was then called Huntington South. The Copiague post office opened in 1903, and the community formed its own fire district in 1928.
North of the tracks, developer John Campagnoli laid out a neighborhood around 1912 and named it Marconiville, after Guglielmo Marconi, the inventor of radio. Marconi himself visited in 1917 and 1927. The name lives on today in Marconi Boulevard, home to the Copiague train station.
The 1920s brought the waterfront developments: American Venice on the old Copiague Neck, and Amity Harbor, whose developer lost its 93-acre bay tract during the Depression. That land became Tanner Park.
