Lindenhurst Real Estate & Local Guide

Lindenhurst, NY Real Estate & Local Guide

Lindenhurst is the biggest village in the Town of Babylon: a South Shore village with a train station right in the middle of downtown, a marina and waterfront park on the Great South Bay, and a history that starts with a town called Breslau.

The Village of Lindenhurst sits in the Town of Babylon, Suffolk County, between Copiague to the west and West Babylon to the east, with North Lindenhurst to the north and the Great South Bay to the south. It's an incorporated village with its own mayor and four trustees, and about 27,000 people as of the 2020 census. This guide also covers North Lindenhurst, the hamlet just north of the Village.

How Lindenhurst Came to Be

Founded as Breslau, 1870

Lindenhurst started as a planned community. Thomas and Abby Welwood partnered with developer Charles Schleier, and the new town of Breslau was dedicated on June 6, 1870. The developers sold building lots and offered jobs and land for houses of worship to get people to come.

Why the Name Changed in 1891

Within 20 years, the Breslau name had baggage. Lawsuits between the Welwoods and Schleier made the New York City papers, and an unsolved 1887 crime got wide coverage. Residents wanted a fresh start, and in 1891 the community became Lindenhurst, named for the linden trees that grew throughout the area. Alexina Cadwallader is credited with suggesting the name. The popular story that the name changed because of World War I is a myth; the change came more than 20 years before that war.

Becoming a Village

Residents voted to incorporate, and the Village of Lindenhurst was born on November 17, 1923. The Village celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2023.

History You Can Still See

  • Feller's Pond at Village Park is named for the Feller family, who ran the Feller Brewery in the village. A historical marker stands at the pond.
  • The Village Museum, at 272 South Wellwood Avenue, is open Wednesdays and Saturdays from 2 to 4 p.m.
  • The 1901 LIRR depot and freight house at Irmisch Park have been restored by the Lindenhurst Historical Society as a museum.
  • Charles J. Cowan Marina is named for Charles J. Cowan, the Village's mayor from 1965 to 1973.

Downtown Lindenhurst & Getting Around

Downtown runs along Wellwood Avenue, with the LIRR station right at Wellwood and Hoffman Avenues. At that same corner is the Village's Town Square and gazebo. The Village created it after a 1996 fire destroyed a commercial block there, then renovated it around 2012 with a gazebo and mural. Today it's the downtown gathering spot for events.

By train: Lindenhurst station is an elevated stop on the Babylon Branch, opened in its current form in 1973, with commuter parking. Check the MTA's station information for current schedules.

By car: Wellwood Avenue connects the bay to downtown and north through North Lindenhurst. Montauk Highway and Sunrise Highway run east-west toward Babylon and toward Amityville, Massapequa and Nassau.

The Waterfront & Village Parks

South of Montauk Highway, Lindenhurst opens up to canals and the Great South Bay. The Village lists:

  • Charles J. Cowan Marina, at the south end of Wellwood Avenue: bay views, benches, fishing and crabbing. Crabbing requires a Village permit (631-957-7500).
  • Shore Road Park, on Shore Road between Arctic Street and South Bay Street: a waterfront playground on the bay, renovated in 2023.
  • Village Park, 336 North Alleghany Avenue: baseball and softball fields, a basketball court, tennis and pickleball courts and a playground, next to Feller's Pond.
  • Weckerle Park, at New York Avenue, North 9th Street and West John Street: a playground with an inclusive swing.
  • Village Square, 116 North Wellwood Avenue, and the 9/11 Memorial Garden on Byrd Street.

Venetian Shores

Just east of the Village, the Town of Babylon's Venetian Shores Park has a bay beach, a spray park, a playground and picnic areas. It's for Town of Babylon residents with a permit, and it opens daily from late June through Labor Day. The Venetian Shores neighborhood uses the Lindenhurst post office and school district, but it's technically part of West Babylon.

Waterfront Homework

Superstorm Sandy flooded more than half of the Village's streets in October 2012. If you're buying south of Montauk Highway, check the flood zone, elevation certificate, flood insurance cost, bulkhead condition and whether the house has been raised. Never assume boat access from a canal view.

North Lindenhurst

North Lindenhurst is the unincorporated hamlet just north of the Village, with about 12,000 people as of the 2020 census. Local government is the Town of Babylon and Suffolk County, not the Village. It borders North Amityville and East Farmingdale to the west and West Babylon to the east, and Route 109 forms its northern edge. It shares the 11757 ZIP code with the Village.

Most of North Lindenhurst is in the Lindenhurst school district, but small parts are in the Copiague and Farmingdale districts, so check the district for the individual property.

Where to Eat & Drink in Lindenhurst
