Babylon Real Estate & Local Guide

Babylon, NY Real Estate & Local Guide

Babylon is the South Shore town center the whole Town of Babylon is named after: a walkable downtown on Deer Park Avenue and Main Street, the end of the line for the LIRR's Babylon Branch, nine village marinas on the Great South Bay, and the barrier beach along Ocean Parkway.

There are three Babylons on the map, each with its own ZIP code. Babylon (11702) is this guide. West Babylon (11704) and North Babylon (11703) are separate communities next door. Babylon 11702 is mostly the incorporated Village of Babylon, plus the Town of Babylon's barrier beach communities across the bay: West Gilgo Beach, Gilgo Beach, Oak Island, Oak Beach and the western part of Captree Island.

The Village of Babylon

Most of Babylon 11702 is the incorporated Village of Babylon, which became the first incorporated village in the Town of Babylon on December 19, 1893. It covers about 2.8 square miles, including the water, and had about 12,200 residents in the 2020 census.

Being a village means a local layer of government and services on top of the Town and County. A few that matter if you live here:

  • Village Hall, 153 West Main Street, in a municipal building dedicated in 1926. It also houses fire department headquarters.
  • Village marinas, pool and golf course, covered below.
  • The Village of Babylon's website has permits, board meetings and village news.

How Babylon Came to Be

Huntington South

Before it was Babylon, this was Huntington South, the southern end of the Town of Huntington. In 1657 the Town of Huntington, represented by Jonas Wood, made a land agreement with the Montaukett sachem Wyandanch known as the deed of the Five Necks, South Side. English settlers drawn by the fish and shellfish of the Great South Bay started farming the South Shore in the late 1600s.

Where the Name Comes From

In 1803, Nathaniel Conklin built a house at the corner of Main Street and Deer Park Avenue with a cornerstone reading "New Babylon, This House Built by Nat Conklin, 1803." He and his mother, Phebe, are credited with starting the name. The local story is that she compared the spot to the Babylon of the Bible because of the noisy tavern across the road. The post office adopted the name Babylon in 1830. The Conklin House was moved in 1871 to Deer Park Avenue near the railroad, and today it's a museum with that cornerstone on display. See the Village's history page for more.

The Railroad and the Resort Years

The South Side Railroad reached Babylon on October 11, 1867, and that turned the village into a resort. In 1871 a horsecar line started running from the depot down to the steamboat dock, where ferries carried people across to the beaches. At least fourteen hotels operated in Babylon between the 1800s and the 1930s. The biggest was the Argyle Hotel, which Long Island Rail Road president Austin Corbin built in 1882. Today, The Argyle Grill & Tavern on Deer Park Avenue carries the name.

A Town, Then a Village

Babylon led the push to split from Huntington, helped along by editorials in the South Side Signal, the local paper founded in 1869. The Town of Babylon formed in 1872, and the Village of Babylon incorporated in 1893.

History You Can Still Find

  • Marconi's wireless station. Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company ran a wireless station and training school on Fire Island Avenue from 1902 to 1907.
  • Argyle Park. J. Stanley Foster gave the park to the village in 1922 as a memorial to his fellow World War I veterans. His sister donated the decorative overflow at Argyle Lake, which was dedicated on Armistice Day in 1928.
  • Southards Pond. Named for the Southard family, who ran a grist mill at the south end of the pond in the 1800s. The Westminster Kennel Club had its clubhouse near the pond from 1880 to 1904.
  • The village pool. Built in 1927 and first filled with salt water from the Great South Bay, it was bought by the village in 1947.
  • Robert Moses. The master builder behind Long Island's parkways and state parks lived in Babylon, and his statue has stood in front of Village Hall since 2003.

Marinas, Beaches & the Barrier Beach

Village Marinas

The Village of Babylon runs nine marinas with more than 450 slips: Argyle Marina, Beach Marina, Boynes Canal, East Creek, Lewis Pond, North Lewis Pond, Southeast Lewis Pond, the Main Dock and Lighthouse Marina. The Village says slips are open to residents and non-residents. Rates and the berth application are on the Village marinas page.

Ocean Beaches

Across the bay on Ocean Parkway, Overlook Beach is one of the Town of Babylon's three ocean beaches. It has lifeguards, a playground, picnic areas with grills, outdoor showers and food service. It's open to Town of Babylon residents only, with a yearly Town recreation permit.

The Barrier Beach Communities

West Gilgo Beach, Gilgo Beach, Oak Island, Oak Beach and the western part of Captree Island all use the Babylon 11702 ZIP code. They're part of the Town of Babylon, not the Village, and they're in the Babylon school district and served by the Babylon Fire Department. The Town says the name Gilgo shows up in Huntington Town records as early as 1793, and "Cap tree" appears in a 1802 lease.
