Uniondale, NY Real Estate & Local Guide

Uniondale is a Nassau County hamlet in the Town of Hempstead, where residential streets meet one of Long Island's best-known educational, sports and commercial corridors. Uniondale Avenue, Jerusalem Avenue and Front Street connect everyday neighborhood life, while the Nassau Coliseum, Hofstra University and Mitchel Field area give the broader community a distinctive place in central Nassau County.

I'm John Cordeira, Broker/Owner of Cordeira Homes. I've spent more than 20 years helping Long Island buyers and sellers, and I believe a useful real estate guide should explain the actual community, not just show a list of houses. Whether you're searching for a home in Uniondale, already own one or simply want to know the area better, this is where to start.

What Is Uniondale Like?

Much of Uniondale is built around established residential blocks with single-family homes, driveways, yards and neighborhood streets. You can find ranches, Capes, Colonials, split-level homes and expanded properties, but the experience of a particular street can vary depending on where it sits relative to busier roads, the campus area and surrounding commercial districts.

Uniondale Avenue and Jerusalem Avenue are important north-south connections. Front Street and Hempstead Turnpike provide access to shops, services and neighboring communities. Rather than having one traditional village-style downtown, Uniondale's everyday businesses and gathering places are spread along several corridors.

Uniondale is close to Hempstead, Roosevelt, East Meadow and Garden City, which expands the options for errands, dining, recreation and transportation. Those boundaries matter when you're buying a home: the postal city, municipality and school district do not always describe exactly the same area.

Hofstra, Nassau Coliseum & the Mitchel Field Area

Hofstra University

Hofstra University is a major presence along Hempstead Turnpike, with campus areas on both sides of the road. The university brings collegiate athletics, arts programming, lectures and other activities to the Uniondale-Hempstead area. For nearby homeowners, campus proximity is a useful location detail to consider alongside traffic patterns and the feel of the residential block.

Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum

The Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum is one of Uniondale's most recognizable landmarks, known for its Long Island sports and entertainment history, including its years as the home of the New York Islanders. The arena property is part of the larger Nassau Hub area, where redevelopment proposals and uses have changed over time. Check current venue information before planning a visit rather than assuming a particular event is scheduled.

Mitchel Athletic Complex & Aviation History

At 1 Charles Lindbergh Boulevard, the Mitchel Athletic Complex is a Nassau County sports facility with a track, playing fields and space used for organized athletic events. County information notes that the track may be available to the public when events are not scheduled; field use requires permission.

The name is a reminder that this area was once associated with Mitchel Field, an important military airfield. The nearby Cradle of Aviation Museum and other Museum Row destinations in neighboring Garden City add another dimension to the area for people interested in Long Island history.

Uniondale Parks & Outdoor Recreation

Uniondale has its own neighborhood parks, and you don't need to leave town to find a playground, ballfield or basketball court.

Bernard Brown Park

Bernard Brown Park, at 699 Smith Street, is listed by the Town of Hempstead with baseball and softball facilities, basketball, handball, paddleball, playground areas and a spray pool.

Uniondale Avenue Park

Uniondale Avenue Park, at 710 Uniondale Avenue, offers amenities that include basketball, tennis, picnic tables and play areas.

Cedar Street Park

Cedar Street Park, at 645 Cedar Street, has facilities listed for football, softball, volleyball, picnicking and play.

More Recreation Close to Uniondale

For larger outings, Eisenhower Park in East Meadow offers extensive recreational space a short trip from parts of Uniondale. The Nassau Hub and Mitchel Athletic Complex also add options for running and organized sports. If you enjoy exploring places to stay active, see our existing Garden City Parks & Outdoor Recreation Guide for additional nearby ideas.

Getting Around Uniondale

Roads & Parkways

Hempstead Turnpike, Front Street, Jerusalem Avenue and Uniondale Avenue help connect different sections of Uniondale. The Meadowbrook State Parkway and Southern State Parkway provide regional access, depending on your starting address and destination.

Long Island Rail Road

Uniondale does not have its own LIRR station. Depending on where you live and how you're traveling, nearby stations such as Hempstead, Country Life Press, Garden City and Mineola may be worth comparing. For current train times, transfers and parking rules, use the MTA.

NICE Bus Service

Nassau Inter-County Express (NICE) operates routes serving the wider area, including connections along Uniondale Avenue and Hempstead Turnpike. Check current route maps and timetables before relying on a particular stop or commute.

One useful home-shopping exercise is to test your usual route from the actual property during the time of day you'd travel. A home's street location can matter more than a general claim that a town is convenient.

Shopping, Dining & Local Businesses

Uniondale's shops, restaurants, neighborhood services and professional businesses are distributed across Uniondale Avenue, Front Street, Jerusalem Avenue and nearby Hempstead Turnpike. Local businesses are an important part of daily life here, rather than everything revolving around one shopping center.

For regional shopping, Roosevelt Field is nearby in Garden City. Explore our existing Roosevelt Field Mall & Garden City Guide for more on that destination.

Our dedicated Uniondale Shopping, Dining & Local Businesses Guide » takes a closer look at local places, including dining along Front Street, options on Hempstead Turnpike, groceries and neighborhood organizations.

Uniondale Community Resources

Uniondale Public Library

The Uniondale Public Library, at 400 Uniondale Avenue, is a practical resource for books, programs, community information and events. Check its website for current services and hours.

Community Organizations

The Uniondale Chamber of Commerce supports local businesses and provides community information. The Greater Uniondale Area Action Coalition is another local organization involved in neighborhood issues and community planning.

These are the kinds of institutions worth following when you want to understand what is happening in Uniondale beyond real estate listings.

Uniondale Schools & School Districts

The Uniondale Union Free School District lists five elementary schools: California Avenue, Grand Avenue, Northern Parkway, Smith Street and Walnut Street. Its secondary schools include Lawrence Road Middle School, Turtle Hook Middle School and Uniondale High School.

Important for buyers: A Uniondale mailing address or the 11553 ZIP code does not, by itself, confirm which school district serves a particular property. Verify the individual address with the district and relevant official records before purchasing.

Uniondale Real Estate: What Buyers Should Look At

Uniondale's housing choices include traditional single-family homes and expanded properties with different layouts, lot sizes and levels of updating. The best comparison is not just two asking prices. It's the location, condition, layout, taxes, permitted improvements, school assignment and recent comparable sales.

Homes nearer a busy corridor may have a different setting from homes on interior blocks. When you're evaluating a finished basement or an additional living area, confirm permits and legal use instead of assuming that marketing language establishes what is allowed.

I'll help you compare the property and the neighborhood together: actual home condition, lot and tax details, street location, access to transportation, and what similar homes have sold for.

Already Own a Home in Uniondale?

A townwide average won't tell you what your particular home could sell for. I look at recent comparable sales, current competition, lot size, condition, improvements and the property's exact location.

Selling a Home in Uniondale

Selling a house here starts with understanding which homes a buyer will compare with yours. A renovated Cape, an expanded ranch and a larger property with an unusual layout should not all be priced or marketed exactly alike.

Presentation matters: accurate property details, quality photography, preparation, pricing, promotion, showing strategy, offer analysis and managing the transaction to closing. As an independent broker-owner, I work directly with my clients on those decisions.
