Parks, Trails & Outdoor Recreation in and Near Garden City, NY
One of the things I like to look at when learning about a Long Island community is what life looks like outside the house.
Where can you walk, run, play sports, take the kids, get outside or simply spend some time away from a screen?
That perspective comes naturally to me because fitness has been part of my life for decades. It is a big part of the #RippedRealtor identity and one of the reasons I enjoy looking at communities from a lifestyle perspective as well as a real estate one.
Garden City has a strong mix of neighborhood parks, athletic facilities, recreation areas and larger outdoor resources nearby.

Garden City Community Park
Garden City Community Park is one of the Village's largest recreation centers and offers a lot more than open grass.
The park includes numerous baseball and softball fields, soccer, seasonal football, tennis, platform tennis, a roller hockey rink, playground areas, picnic space and miniature golf.
The Garden City Pool is also located within the Community Park area.
From a #RippedRealtor perspective, I like areas like this because they make it easy for families and active residents to have recreation close to home instead of having to leave the community every time they want to do something outdoors.
St. Paul's Recreation Complex
St. Paul's Recreation Complex is another major recreation area in Garden City.
The complex includes approximately 30 acres of parkland with soccer and lacrosse fields, a baseball field, playground space and open green areas.
St. Paul's also includes indoor recreational facilities, including basketball courts and a small running track inside the Field House.
That combination of fields, open space and indoor recreation makes it one of the more versatile activity centers in the Village.
Garden City's Neighborhood Parks
Garden City also has several smaller neighborhood parks distributed throughout the Village.
These may not have the scale of Community Park or St. Paul's, but they are an important part of everyday neighborhood life.
Edgemere Park
Edgemere Park, at Edgemere Road and Yale Street, includes basketball, tennis and pickleball courts along with a baseball/softball field and playground.
Grove Park
Grove Park, at Grove and Poplar Streets, offers baseball and softball, basketball, soccer or flag football space, tennis, volleyball, playground equipment and a picnic area.
Hemlock Park
Hemlock Park includes athletic fields, basketball, tennis, volleyball, pickleball and playground space.
Nassau Haven Park
Nassau Haven Park, near Colonial Avenue and Hudson Road, includes baseball and softball fields, basketball, tennis, soccer or flag football space and playground equipment.
Tullamore Park
Tullamore Park, at Tullamore Road and Somerset Avenue, offers an athletic field, baseball or softball, basketball, tennis and playground space.
Stewart Field
Stewart Field, located along Stewart Avenue near Stewart School, is another Village athletic facility.
It includes several baseball and softball fields along with seasonal lacrosse and football space.
For families involved in youth sports, these types of neighborhood facilities can become a regular part of everyday life in the community.
Garden City Pool
Garden City Pool is located at Community Park and operates seasonally.
The facility includes an Olympic-sized pool, lap pool, children's pool, water slides, picnic areas and other amenities.
The Village states that the pool is open to resident members and their guests, so homeowners considering Garden City may want to review current membership and eligibility information directly with the Recreation Department.
Swimming is also something I like including in a #RippedRealtor outdoor guide because staying active does not always have to mean lifting weights or going for a run.
Hempstead Plains Preserve: A Rare Natural Resource
One of the most interesting outdoor resources in the Garden City area is the Hempstead Plains Preserve on the Nassau Community College campus.
This is not a traditional manicured Village park.
It protects a rare remnant of the grassland prairie that once covered a large part of central Long Island.
The preserve has nearly a mile of trails and is home to hundreds of plant species along with habitat for birds, butterflies and other wildlife.
I particularly like including a place like this because it shows another side of central Nassau County. You can be surrounded by roads, shopping and development and still have a protected natural habitat nearby.
If you plan to visit, check current public hours before going because access can vary by day and season.
Eisenhower Park Near Garden City
Just outside Garden City in East Meadow is Eisenhower Park, one of Nassau County's largest outdoor recreation destinations.
The park covers approximately 930 acres and offers an enormous range of recreation, including athletic fields, courts, playgrounds, golf, swimming, walking and fitness trails, picnic space and seasonal events.
For runners, walkers and anyone who simply wants a lot of open space, Eisenhower dramatically expands the outdoor options available near Garden City.
It is also home to the Nassau County Aquatic Center and major sports facilities, making it useful for both casual recreation and more structured training.
