Bethpage Parks, Golf, Trails & Outdoor Recreation

Bethpage has one of Long Island's most recognizable outdoor connections: Bethpage State Park and the trail network that leads toward Massapequa Preserve. Whether you're into golf, a weekend bike ride, a long walk or simply getting outdoors, there's more here than the famous Black Course.

I'm John Cordeira, Broker/Owner of Cordeira Homes. Fitness and time outdoors are a big part of my life, and they're a natural extension of my #RippedRealtor brand. I put this guide together for anyone who wants to explore Bethpage beyond the real estate listings.

Bethpage State Park

Main address: 99 Quaker Meeting House Road, Farmingdale, NY 11735. Even though Bethpage is in the park's name, this is the official main address; don't confuse it with a park entrance in the center of downtown Bethpage.

New York State Parks lists golf, trails, biking, picnic areas, playing fields, tennis, bridle paths and winter activities among the park's offerings. The practical experience changes by season and location within this large park.

Five Public Golf Courses

The park's Black, Red, Blue, Green and Yellow courses make this a major public-golf destination. Bethpage Black hosted the U.S. Open in 2002 and 2009, the PGA Championship in 2019 and the Ryder Cup in 2025. The state's official park site has course and reservation information; availability, prices and rules can change.

Walking, Hiking & Nature

You don't have to play golf to enjoy the park. There are wooded walking routes and trail connections, with sections that feel much quieter than a busy commercial street. Trail surfaces and difficulty vary. Use the official Bethpage State Park trail map, bring water and check seasonal advisories before venturing onto unfamiliar paths.

Picnics, Fields & Seasonal Activities

The state park also includes picnic opportunities, playing fields and additional recreational facilities. Reservations, vehicle entrance fees and permits may apply to certain areas or activities. Verify details with the park rather than assuming every facility is available on a given day.

Bethpage Bikeway: A Great Ride Toward Massapequa

The Bethpage Parkway Shared Use Path connects Bethpage State Park southward toward Massapequa Preserve at Merrick Road. It's a particularly useful route for cyclists, runners and walkers who want an extended outing through a largely green corridor instead of ordinary street traffic.

Plan your distance in advance—an out-and-back ride adds up quickly. Share the path courteously, expect crossings and changing conditions, and use lights or reflective gear when appropriate.

John's outdoor tip: For a low-pressure first visit, pick one marked section of the path or park, enjoy the scenery and turn around with plenty of energy left. If you want a bigger workout, build up the distance over a few outings. Consistency beats trying to conquer the whole network on day one.

Nearby Trail Connections Worth Knowing

Massapequa Preserve

South of the Bethpage State Park corridor, Peter J. Schmitt Massapequa Preserve offers paths, wooded areas and water views. It's a separate Nassau County preserve, but the connecting bikeway makes it a natural extension of a Bethpage outdoor trip.

Trail View State Park & the Greenbelt

For a longer northbound hiking experience, consult the state trail map for the Greenbelt and Trail View State Park connections. Routes can include wooded single-track and more uneven footing than the paved bikeway. Choose a route suited to your pace and experience.

Bethpage Community Park: Current Conditions Matter

Bethpage Community Park is a Town of Oyster Bay facility with a complicated recent history. Environmental investigation and remediation at former Grumman settling-pond areas have resulted in closures and changes to park access. The Town of Oyster Bay currently notes that some parts of the park are closed for renovation; check the status of the specific facility you plan to use.

Before visiting a specific pool, skating rink, playground, skate area or field, verify its individual status through the Town of Oyster Bay Parks Department. For factual cleanup updates, consult the NYSDEC Bethpage project page. Do not assume that a general facilities list means every area is currently accessible.

How Does Outdoor Access Relate to Bethpage Real Estate?

Some buyers want easy access to running paths and golf; others care more about a quiet residential block, nearby stores or a particular commuting route. Homes in the Bethpage postal area can offer different combinations of those features. The right comparison is property-specific.
