Plainview Parks, Trails & Outdoor Recreation

Plainview's best outdoor asset is a trail corridor most people drive right past: Trail View State Park, a 7.4-mile linear park that links Bethpage State Park to Cold Spring Harbor.

Trail View State Park

Trail View State Park is a 7.4-mile linear state park connecting Bethpage State Park with Cold Spring Harbor State Park.

It was built on land the state acquired in the 1960s for a northern extension of the Bethpage State Parkway that was never built. Today it carries part of the Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt Trail.

New York State Parks manages it in two sections. The southern section, from Jericho Turnpike south to Haypath Road, is overseen by Bethpage State Park. The northern section is overseen by Caumsett, and no pets are allowed there. Check the state's page for current rules before you bring a dog.

The Bethpage Bikeway

The paved Bethpage Bikeway was extended north through Trail View State Park. That means you can ride, run or walk on pavement from the Woodbury Road area south through Bethpage State Park and on toward the Massapequa Preserve on the South Shore.

The bikeway and the Greenbelt Trail are not the same route. The bikeway is paved and multi-use. The Greenbelt Trail is a separate hiking footpath that heads north toward Cold Spring Harbor.

Plainview-Old Bethpage Community Park

The Town of Oyster Bay's Plainview-Old Bethpage Community Park at 175 Washington Avenue is the neighborhood hub for ballfields, courts, playgrounds and a seasonal outdoor pool.

Pool memberships and registration are handled by the Town, and the pool season runs through Labor Day. See the Town of Oyster Bay pool page for current dates and fees.

Bethpage State Park, Right Next Door

Just south of Plainview, Bethpage State Park is home to its well-known public golf courses, along with picnic areas, trails and the bikeway. For golfers and runners, it's one of the biggest perks of living in this part of Nassau.

Indoor Options When the Weather Turns

The Mid-Island Y JCC on Manetto Hill Road has an indoor pool and fitness center for members, and Plainview has several studios and a big-box gym. See my Plainview gyms & fitness guide »
