August 19th, 2022: This morning I received an article via email regarding the revitalization of the sunrise mall. After reading a few paragraphs, it mentions part of the development will be housing, I thought there wasn’t supposed to be any housing in the Sunrise Mall Massapequa project, then I realized this is another Sunrise Mall redevelopment project in Citrus Heights, California.

Sunrise Mall has been a fixture in Massapequa since opening some 50 years ago, but it looks like the sun is finally setting on this shopping center that has served generations. Urban Edge Properties and its partners acquired the 1.2 million-square-foot, two-story mall on 77 acres on Jan 4, 2021. It says leases are not being renewed. As LI Massapequa Sunrise mall faces closure, its fish need a new home

MASSAPEQUA, NY — The new owners of the Sunrise Mall Massapequa are letting the leases with the mall’s current tenants expire as part of the company’s plan to revitalize the shopping center.

The mall’s owners, Urban Edge Properties, said the move was designed to keep the Sunrise Mall a “positive economic force in the community.” Allowing the leases to expire will give Urban Edge more options for redevelopment, but will also push the stores there to new locations — or out of business.
