Cold Spring Harbor Parks, Trails & Outdoor Recreation
Cold Spring Harbor's outdoor spaces are shaped by something different from the flat South Shore landscape: wooded hills, a harbor waterfront, old glacial terrain and access to the Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt Trail. For hikers, photographers and people who like being outside, these surroundings are part of what makes the North Shore distinct.
I'm John Cordeira, Broker/Owner of Cordeira Homes, and I recently hiked the Nassau-Suffolk Trail here myself. My 6.39-mile Cold Spring Harbor to Uplands Farm hike includes original photos and my personal take on the hills, scenery and trail conditions. This page is the broader guide to local outdoor options.
Cold Spring Harbor State Park: The Northern Trailhead
95 Harbor Road, Cold Spring Harbor, NY 11724. New York State Parks describes this 40-acre state park as hilly mixed-hardwood forest with scenic harbor views, mature oaks and mountain laurel. It also serves as the northern trailhead of the Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt Trail, which extends south through the Long Island landscape toward Bethpage and the South Shore.
It's a wooded, uphill hiking setting, not the same as a paved shoreline path. The state says hiking, jogging, walking, birdwatching and photography are permitted throughout the year, with parking and park access from sunrise to sunset. Consult the official park guide and trail map before heading out.

The Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt Trail
This roughly 20-mile north-to-south trail system connects different parks and preserves. It is particularly interesting because you can begin among Cold Spring Harbor's steep wooded hills and travel toward South Shore terrain farther south. The local Main Street association's trail overview and the state park map are useful starting points.
Uplands Farm Sanctuary: Meadows, Woods and a Former Dairy Farm
Uplands Farm Sanctuary, managed by The Nature Conservancy, is a different experience from the steep state park: a 97-acre former dairy farm landscape with a silo, open meadows, woodland, wildlife habitat and approximately 2.5 miles of marked paths. Its West Loop connects with the longer Nassau-Suffolk Trail. Visit the official sanctuary site for a map and directions.
Uplands Farm is generally open dawn to dusk. The Nature Conservancy does not allow pets on its preserves, and it advises tick precautions, especially during the warmer months. Follow posted signs and stay off restricted habitat areas.
Cold Spring Harbor Park: Enjoying the Water
For a more relaxed outing, Cold Spring Harbor Park sits by the harbor near Route 25A. Rather than an extended hike, this is a place to look over the water, watch boats and appreciate the landscape. The Town of Huntington lists the park on the north side of Route 25A; check Town park directions and posted rules.

More Nature-Oriented Stops
The Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium at 1660 Route 25A is a useful nearby stop for learning about local freshwater animals and habitats. The Nature Conservancy's St. John's Pond Preserve provides additional woods and wildlife-viewing opportunities; check its current access and parking rules.
Outdoor Space and Real Estate
On my hike I noticed homes close to wooded sections of the route, which made me curious about the surrounding community. Living near a park can be an advantage for someone who likes to walk, run or hike, but a home described as "backing the trail" deserves careful verification. Check the lot survey, public trail access, ownership of the buffer land, drainage and any easements before making assumptions.
