Two distinct Long Island communities. One shared ZIP code, 11710. One useful place to explore both.
Bellmore and North Bellmore are neighboring Nassau County communities in the Town of Hempstead. Both are associated with ZIP code 11710, but they are not interchangeable: the southern Bellmore community has a recognizable downtown, its own Long Island Rail Road station and waterfront neighborhoods, while North Bellmore centers more on residential streets, local schools, parks and the Newbridge Road and Jerusalem Avenue corridors.
I'm John Cordeira, Broker/Owner of Cordeira Homes in Massapequa. For more than 20 years, I've helped Long Island buyers and sellers look beyond the listing photos and understand what makes each address different. This combined guide covers Bellmore and North Bellmore together while giving their elementary school districts and local identities the attention they deserve.

Bellmore: For many residents, the focal point is Bedford Avenue and the surrounding downtown streets near Bellmore's LIRR station. The area extends south toward Merrick Road, waterways and residential sections where some properties have docks or water views. Conditions vary street by street: a home near downtown is a very different proposition from one along a canal.
North Bellmore: North Bellmore has its own residential identity farther north, with everyday shopping and connections along Newbridge Road and Jerusalem Avenue. The parks, school system and streets near community facilities can influence what buyers prioritize here. North Bellmore isn't simply another name for Bellmore, even though the two share 11710.
Real estate detail: A 11710 mailing address does not, by itself, confirm whether a property is in Bellmore or North Bellmore, its municipal circumstances, or a child's specific school assignment. Check the actual property records and school boundaries.
One of the most important differences between the two communities is how the public school districts are organized. Bellmore and North Bellmore have separate elementary districts for kindergarten through sixth grade, but both feed into the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District for grades 7-12. The larger secondary district also serves Merrick and North Merrick.
Bellmore's elementary district operates three schools:
Official information: Bellmore Union Free School District.
North Bellmore's elementary district has five neighborhood elementary schools:
Official information: North Bellmore School District.
The shared secondary district includes Grand Avenue Middle School in Bellmore and Merrick Avenue Middle School in Merrick, plus three high schools: Wellington C. Mepham High School and John F. Kennedy High School in Bellmore, and Sanford H. Calhoun High School in Merrick.
Yes, Calhoun is physically in Merrick. It belongs to the same central high school district serving the Bellmores and the Merricks. A school's physical address is not a school-attendance guarantee for a particular house.
The district provides an official map with house numbers and high-school attendance areas through its transportation page. Consult that map and confirm the individual address directly with the district before making a purchase decision. School boundaries and assignments can change.
Important home-search limitation: MLS school-district fields are not a substitute for the elementary and high-school attendance maps. The homes displayed at the bottom of this page are grouped by community, not guaranteed to be in a particular elementary or high-school zone.
Bellmore has an LIRR station on the Babylon Branch, near Bedford Avenue and Sunrise Highway. Buyers who commute by rail may want to compare how easily each address reaches the station, whether they expect to drive or walk, and current parking rules. Residents of North Bellmore commonly need to travel farther south to reach the station.
For actual timetables, connections and service advisories, consult the MTA rather than relying on an estimated travel time shown in a home listing.
Sunrise Highway and Merrick Road are important east-west routes, while Newbridge Road and Bellmore Avenue connect various parts of the area. Jerusalem Avenue serves the northern part of the community. For drivers, proximity to the Southern State Parkway and Wantagh State Parkway may also matter depending on the address and destination.
Newbridge Road Park, at 2600 Newbridge Road, is a significant local outdoor and recreation destination. Town of Hempstead facilities include playing fields, courts, playgrounds, an indoor ice rink and outdoor swimming pools. Some activities and facilities have seasonal schedules, fees or residency requirements, so check the Town's official page before visiting.
The Town of Hempstead identifies Newbridge Road Park as a South Shore Blueway launch site. Its published resources also describe seasonal kayak and paddleboard storage options. This is a good example of outdoor recreation that connects the Bellmores with the wider South Shore.
Some southern Bellmore homes have canal settings, boat docks or water views. Buyers considering waterfront property should evaluate flood maps and insurance requirements, dock and bulkhead conditions, permits, tidal access and navigability for the individual address. Those features should be checked with appropriate inspectors and local officials; do not assume every waterfront listing offers the same boating opportunities.
Start with the FEMA Flood Map Service Center when reviewing mapped flood hazards. See also our existing Long Island Waterfront Homes resource.
Bedford Avenue near the Bellmore station is a natural place to begin exploring local shops, restaurants and neighborhood activity. The area's commercial streets include a mix of independent businesses, services, places to eat and gathering spots. Merrick Road adds more shopping and dining opportunities to the south.
The Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores covers businesses in both communities and publishes information about local events, including the Bellmore Family Street Festival and other community activities. Event dates and participating businesses change, so use the Chamber's current calendar.
North Bellmore's everyday conveniences are spread across neighborhood commercial corridors, including Newbridge Road and Jerusalem Avenue. Buyers should think about the routes they would actually use for groceries, school pickup, parks and recreation, not only how far the house is from downtown Bellmore.
The Bellmore Memorial Library is at 2288 Bedford Avenue. The North Bellmore Public Library is at 1551 Newbridge Road. Both provide community programming and practical services; check their websites for current offerings.
The right fit depends on more than a shared ZIP code. We'll look at each home's location, condition, school-assignment verification, access to the train, nearby amenities, property taxes and—in southern Bellmore—waterfront considerations when applicable.
A Bellmore home near the LIRR, a North Bellmore home in a particular elementary district and a Bellmore waterfront property can attract different buyer priorities. A useful valuation compares relevant recent sales and considers the actual location, lot, condition, improvements, school information, and market activity.
When it's time to sell, I focus on preparing the property, reviewing comparable sales that truly match its setting, and presenting the home's strengths accurately. We should be specific about which community and school information can be verified, not blur the two towns together for marketing purposes.

Yes. Both commonly use ZIP code 11710. However, a ZIP code does not establish the exact community, elementary district or school assignment for an address.
Not for every grade. They have separate K-6 elementary districts: Bellmore Union Free School District and North Bellmore Union Free School District. Both are part of the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District for grades 7-12.
No. Sanford H. Calhoun High School is physically located in Merrick. It is part of the shared Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, so school attendance must be verified by individual address.
Wellington C. Mepham High School and John F. Kennedy High School are located in Bellmore. The wider district also includes Sanford H. Calhoun High School in Merrick. Physical location alone does not determine attendance.
Bellmore's LIRR station is in the southern Bellmore area on the Babylon Branch. Residents of North Bellmore can use the station, but their travel distance and parking options depend on the individual address.
Yes, some properties in southern Bellmore offer water-related features, but not all homes are waterfront. Any dock, bulkhead, water access and flood-related characteristics need property-specific verification.
